5 Reasons Building Materials Are Hard to Find During the COVID Crisis
COVID-19 has caused a stir throughout the entire world this year, and its impact continues to be felt, both through the loss of loved ones and through the many restrictions that have been imposed.
These restrictions have also caused a great deal of harm to the economy, and the construction industry has definitely been affected to a great extent:
- Materials previously mined or produced in the USA are in shortage because of the restrictions imposed during the first half of 2020, when production has been halted entirely.
- Building materials that have previously been imported from China and other places where lots of businesses were closed down during the pandemic are also very hard to find nowadays.
- There are also materials that have been available previously, but that were purchased in bulk by contractors who have predicted the shortage. Now those materials are typically not available to purchase except from those particular contractors.
- Some suppliers have changed their policies to avoid importing materials from countries such as Italy or China earlier this year, due to their fear of the virus. As a result, they have stopped or at least reduced the volume on imports of building materials from China and domestic materials such as windows and flooring coming from Italy. Until imports pick up again, these materials are in shortage.
- Price impacts have led to some manufacturers, suppliers and contractors being unable to find many of the materials they need. As such, their production lines are often lagging behind, and there’s a shortage of vital products based on materials that are available, but too pricey.
